Flow volume through expanded metal is governed by Open Area, that is the ratio of air to metal.
Flow direction can also be controlled using Standard (unflattened) expanded metal. Gas or liquid follows the uniform tilt of each strand rather than passing directly through.

The two samples below are produced from the same die pattern, with one employing flow control and direction techniques to control fluid in an oil cooler:
